Fresh from a successful tour across Ontario, local actor Matthew Gibson, named by The National Post as one of the best actors of 2004, brings The Gospel According to Saint Mark to vivid life upon the Baby Grand stage. Gibson gives what is considered the oldest of the Gospels a dramatic two-hour solo performance, bringing the text alive through a unique blend of storytelling and theatricality. Make sure you don't let the opportunity to experience this extraordinary masterpiece pass you by!

Press and audience response to the production has been overwhelmingly positive: The Kingston Whig Standard called it, “A must-see, moving production…a great play.” The Queen’s Journal raved, “A one-of-a-kind theatrical experience…a tour de force.” Touring audiences have submitted page after page of glowing reviews: “Infinite in it’s variety;” “Evocative. Powerful;” “Absolutely amazing;” “Superb.”

The story of the life of Jesus Christ is a remarkable tale that has captured the imagination of people of all ages, races, and creeds for millennia. Mark’s gospel focuses on the major events of Jesus’ adult life: his baptism, his ministry and miracles, and his eventual betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection. It is an enlightening, moving, and exciting account which highlights Jesus’ humanity, his humour and his frustration, as well as his wisdom and compassion.

The text of the performance is taken from the King James Bible of 1611. Published at roughly the same time that Shakespeare’s later tragedies and romances were being written, the King James Bible exhibits a degree of linguistic beauty shared by the other great works of Renaissance literature.

The dramatic power of Mark’s gospel was first demonstrated by British actor Alec McCowen, who toured the world with his performance more than two decades ago. McCowen observed that "whether or not you are a believer, it is impossible to study St. Mark carefully and not know – without any shadow of doubt – that something amazing happened in Galilee 2,000 years ago."

Hope Theatre Projects is Kingston’s most exciting professional not-for-profit theatre company! The Gospel According to Saint Mark follows the shining success of last summer’s April in Paris and 2007’s flagship production of Yasmina Reza’s “Art” (which was staged in the unique venue of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre). Hope Theatre Projects is helmed by Co-Artistic Directors Matthew Gibson and Jennifer Radford Gibson. Hope Theatre produces intellectually and emotionally challenging plays which address issues relevant to the Kingston community, and which ensure a richly entertaining experience for Kingston’s diverse audiences.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Radford Gibson at 613-547-2860 or at hopetheatre@gmail.com. This production is made possible by the support of the Davies
Charitable Foundation, the Kingston Whig Standard, and the Kingston Arts Council.
